Historic properties are more than just structures. They're links to our past and artifacts of architectural excellence. They're a physical reminder of the value of handcrafted quality, dotted with rich details that differentiate them not only from each other, but also from modern-day properties that fail to exhibit the character of historic properties. Susan Myers understands.
"When I look at those gated communities full of new houses that all look alike, I just don't get it," Susan says.
A Savannah Connection
Susan moved to Savannah from New York City as a teenager when her father's business brought them here. One might expect a big-city girl to take some time getting accustomed to her new surroundings, but not Susan. She was immediately smitten with Savannah and chose to embrace its good-hearted people, distinctive charm and wealth of interesting architecture.
Susan's connection to historic properties began later in life after she had married and had her daughter. The family returned to Savannah after living in London and purchased an 1840-era home in the historic Landmark District. She still lives there to this day, but that's not to say the home – or Susan – haven't changed since then.
A Community Advocate
Susan's home inspired her to begin studying preservation, and before long, she found herself not only preserving her own home, but also serving on countless renewal projects, zoning boards and preservation commissions. She's been instrumental in getting Savannah's legendary squares refurbished and helping preserve 14 historic cottages in another part of town. Having earlier earned her bachelor's degree in history from the University of Georgia, she returned to school and obtained another bachelor's degree – this time in historic preservation – from the Savannah College of Arts and Design. Needless to say, Susan had discovered her passion.
"Living and working with these properties is like having a link to the past every day," she says. "It's fascinating to me to soak it all in – the stunning architecture, the high quality of work that stands the test of time, the high ceilings. Everything about these properties is just so distinctive."
